Utamawazo is a kiswahili term that refers to the culturally structured thought — or worldview — that is determined by the primordial essence of a people. It determines the way in which people are socialized to perceive, think and experience the world. If we are perceiving, thinking and experiencing the world as free people, then we should express that through our socialization. If we are truly free our freedom will demand to express itself not just verbally, but through our actions. If we can not express our freedom through names that indicate we are totally, completely and absolutely free, how do we distinguish between ourselves and a person who was told who their name was by a plantation owner?
